
Gestational diabetes – a few questions here?
I was diagnosed yesterday with borderline gestational diabetes. Also, I have very low iron so am on iron therapy.
I am 31 weeks pregnant.
I am now going to be VERY careful with what I eat (sugar wise) but I was wondering what else I could do to make my levels more acceptable? I walk as much as I can but that is the only form of exercise I get (It is winter here in New Zealand)
There is no history of any type of diabetes in our family.
Is gest. diabetes common?
My midwife suggested I consume less chocolate (SOOO GUILTY!!! – I have been having chocolate cravings for a few months now.)
I am aware of the risks accociated with this disease e.g large baby, risk of c-section etc.
My midwife also said baby is not in the optimal birthing position and she gave me a list of “gravity induced” excersises to do. Do I need to worry 9 weeks (hopefully) out from birth about his position? He is already engaging.
My midwife explained the possibility of longer birth and back labour.
First baby
I had Gestational Diabetes with my 4th pregnancy and I am now diagnosed with Glucose Intolerance, a form of pre-diabetes. It is common for many people to think about the connection between “sugar” and diabetes. However, the “sugar” they are referring to is not just the white granulated stuff you put on your cereal in the morning. A more accurate thing to think about are carbohydrates and keeping your intake of them in consistant moderation. There are quite a number of food catergories to monitor when managing any form of diabetes. Breads, grains, cereals, pasta, rice, fruit and juice, milk and yogurt, legumes (dried beans), starchy vegetables (corn, potatoes, green peas), starchy snacks and sweets all contain carbohydrates. A consistant intake of carbohydrates throughout the day helps keep your blood sugar at an even level. Trying to eat 5-6 small meals throughout the day is a healthy goal. I suggest you don’t eliminate any food group or item, not even chocolate. Instead, be a good label reader and stick to eating carbs in their recommended serving quantity and spread them out evenly between all your meals and snacks. Increase your vegetable intake and try to have some form of lean protein at most, if not all, meals and snacks. I am not sure if it is a world-wide statistic (I live in the US), but about 3-5% of women are diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes. Position of the baby doesn’t really have any consistant rules. Some babies are turned breech or in other less than optimal positions close to labor and still manage to turn properly. Others get in a comfortable position to them and just refuse to budge no matter what you do. It really isn’t as much to worry about now as it was in years past since the use of ultrasounds is so much more common. Potentially difficult birthing positions can be detected so much more readily and c-sections can be performed before mom and/or baby end up in distress with possible complications. It’s impossible not to worry when it comes to your children, but it sounds as if your midwife is right on top of checking for any potential problems which is a good thing.
