Physical therapy after ankle surgery adding plates and screws?
Ok back at the end of March I fell off a second floor roof outside of my window breaking the tibia in my right ankle sending the bone into the ankle dislocating the whole thing. I then had surgery a few days later and was hospitalized for almost two weeks. I was put in a splint and bed rest for almost a month and then put on a no weight bearing cast for 9 weeks. after not being able to walk or move my ankle it has gotten so stiff and even simple walking in my house hurts. it tends to get really swollen and painful. I was told because im young (17) that I don’t need physical therapy as I can recooperate on my own. It has gotten very difficult and I need exercises to strenghten my ankle again and get the basic range of motion. any physical therapy exercises would be great. please help ♥
You need physical therapy if you want to gain as much stability in your ankle as possible to prevent larger ankle and other lower extremity problems when you get older. For now at least move your ankle as far through your range of motion as possible without pain. Try and increase that. It will be difficult for you to exercise it on your own as I am sure the surgeon did not send you home with an exercise pamphlet. I agree with the other posters, you need to demand PT or you will regret it later in life.
