Do people in the healthcare regard the doctors in physical therapy as more respected than than the masters PT?
I know that there isn’t much difference in salary but I want to know if people in the hospital workplace regard the DPT as a much more qualified and higher level education than the masters?
Just deciding between state University of California Northridge master of PT and a DPT from University of southern California… I know USC is a very tough school to get into… What are the cons of going to the state university though?
Most hospital workers and physicians don’t even know that it requires at least a master’s degree to become a PT. Therefore, the doctorate does not make much difference in our interdiciplinary interactions. However, from a direct access standpoint, the DPT IS designed to be the focus of direct access. Should a state in which you reside decide to open up to direct access (and many already have), you might be limited on this option if you only have an MPT.
The fact of a program being a state school is of little consequence. You need to look at the specifics of the program…what is their rate of first pass? How many publications has the university put forth in the last few years? What is the faculty to student ratio? What are the qualifications of the faculty?
