Is it normal to hurt MORE after the first visit for acupuncture?
I’ve had lower back problems for several years (disc/nerve problems), tried chiropractic care, physical therapy, etc. Have been wanting to try Acupuncture for some time now, and finally did yesterday. But today, I’m hurting a hundred times worse. Is this normal?
This is chronic pain, not acute. I know it takes more than one visit to help with chronic pain. I also know that with acute pain, it relieves it pretty much immediately. So my question was referring to chronic conditions, as to if it’s normal to hurt a lot more the following day, practually unable to walk. (thanks melanie)
No. A good acupuncturist should have been able to supply some relief.
I’m actually concerned about some of the answers you are getting AND your question. Acupuncture should NEVER make you feel worse. It may not help right away as it sometimes is cumulative in it’s relief effect, but it should never create more pain. Most people receive SOME relief immediately, although it may not last for long until several treatments have been completed. I’d certainly recommend that you talk to your acupuncturist IMMEDIATELY about the additional pain after treatment. If he/she is unable to treat you without causing additional pain, I would suggest that you see another acupuncturist and be honest about what is happening. They can’t help you if you aren’t completely frank.
I’m a big supporter of alternative medicine, but you should be very aware of what to expect when you see a specialist. Don’t go in blindly and do ask questions. Remember, this is an art as much as a science. Even the best surgeons make mistakes. So do the best acupuncturists.
