Is is possible to stay in a relationship with someone who is depressed?
My boyfriend of over a year has recently been diagnosed with depression however refuses to seek any type of treatment (medication or just talk therapy).
How do I continue to encourage him to get him to seek help (I know he can’t be helped if he doesn’t want to be) without seeming overbearing or “naggy”?
Is it possible to stay in a relationship with someone when they refuse to get help with depression? We all like to believe in the notion of unconditional and limitless love and support, however I am only human and can only take so much when there are no signs of a light at the end of a tunnel.
Any advice?
There is no such thing as unconditional love and support, so don’t even entertain the notion. You’ll only lay a guilt trip on yourself.
It’s extremely difficult to be in a relationship with a depressed person, and impossible if they aren’t working on themselves. If they refuse to get help and improve themselves then you are just begging to be dragged down with them. Someone who is depressed is incapable of maintaining a relationship. Depressed people are extremely self centered in that state, and a relationship is hard enough let alone with a self centered person. If they don’t get help then it will always be about them and their problems. You can’t save someone unwilling.
