
Is cognitive behavioral therapy only about undoing negative thoughts?
I understand and have practiced “catching” unconscious negative thoughts and turning them around to feel better. But can you use CBT – and how – to motivate yourself say to exercise or diet or engage in any fruitful behavior (like in my case writing) on a regular basis when you have no self-discipline?
Keep in mind that CBT is a therapeutic intervention performed by a professional with a client. However, there are some things that you can do on your own…
You can try to keep track of what situations make you feel more or less motivated. Most people have certain ways that they typically react to certain stimuli. So, by changing stimuli, you can change your behavior. CBT ia about undoing negative thoughts but it is also about noticing the behavior that follows certain thoughts or situations. Think about when you feel most like writing. And when you are having difficulty, try to imagine what it will feel like to complete your task. Try to concentrate on that positive thought and it could help motivate you. Try writing for small bits at a time (5 minutes, 10 minutes) until you feel inspired. If you are still having difficulty, think about what barriers may be preventing you from writing. Do you have other unfinished tasks? Did you have a fight with a partner or friend? What do you need to do to resolve these issues? If possible, try to set them aside just for an hour. Give yourself a reward for completing your assignment (like something good to eat, a movie, or whatever else will help you).
