Can whole-body vibrations have a damaging effect on the central nervous system / brain?
And at what severity, and what duration?
For example, could a five minute drive down a hard, bouncy, gravel road be enough to elicit brain damage via the vibrations, or does it take something much more vigorous, like being violently slung back and forth, ala shaken baby syndrome?
The brain is cushioned by three membrane layers of tissue that separate it from the skull. And, the brain is suspended in spinal fluid that absorbs mechanical shock.
It is unlikely, in my opinion, that anyone would suffer significant brain damage from such an experience. Now, if a child is shaken hard enough and slung around, that could definitely lead to brain damage. The brain, while cushioned in spinal fluid, can bounce up against the inside of the skull hard enough to cause bleeding and tissue deformity, among other things.
