Can I safely flex my ankle one week post surgery if I have no pain?
I am one week post surgery for a bimalleolar fracture with subluxation. On the X-rays I see a long plate held in place by a series of short pins and one long screw. I am still in the phase of “no weight on it, keep it elevated” and am due for the first post-op visit in 5 days. While my foot is resting on a pillow or chair, I can flex the ankle up and down. (Imagine shortening and lengthening the Achilles tendon.) I can do this with no pain.
Does this help me get a “jump start” on physical therapy by loosening and strengthening things? As long as it is painless, is it harmless and perhaps helpful?
I would not do that without checking with the surgeon.
