Does acupuncture help knee pain?
I am 48 years old and have injured my knees – worn down from years of athletics, but the turning point was lifting too much weight on the leg press machine. Both knee caps are now tilted as a result. I have lost mobility, have pain every day, hear crackling, popping, clicking, etc. I am currently in physical therapy for the 3rd time. I have seen orthopedists – one would operate, the other is conservative and says not at this time. At this point I am considering alternative therapies – thank you to anyone who has comments or advice!
Acupuncture can often treat knee pain very effectively, and help restore function. Depending on the amount of damage present in the knees there will be an impact on how long the treatments manage the pain. Be aware that acupuncture is not going to “fix” the structural damage, it will only help manage the pain.
Recent studies utilizing MRI and PET scans show discernible differences in activity in the pain centers of the brain when acupuncture is compared to proposed placebo methods.
