Pyhsical Therapy?
Okay so I want to be a Physical Therapist. I’m not too sure whether or not I should be and exercise and health fitness major and then get my masters in physical therapy, or, major in biology with my masters in physical therapy. Any ideas???
Your undergraduate degree can be in any field you wish…as long as you complete all the prerequisite courses. However, for time sake, most students choose a major that will encompass most of these classes. Examples include biology, exercise physiology, kinesiology, etc. If you plan to go for the DPT program, you will definetely need to complete a bachelor’s degree. However, if you plan on completing the MS level program, you might not have to complete your degree prior to admission to the professional phase. It all depends on the structure of the program.
Job prospects and salary are the same for PTs with MS or DPT…but the DPT contains several courses not offered at the MS level…it’s a growing trend, but certainly not necessary.
My suggestion: complete your MS in PT, get a job at a company that offers good tuition reimbursement. After two years of practice, have THEM fund a transitional DPT which can be done on a part-time basis.
