Do you pay tip for acupuncture and massage therapy sessions? if so, how much?
I always tip, because of this very simple thing: No matter where they work-whether its spa, clinic or hospital-you never know how they are getting (or arent getting paid).
It is very silly to believe that just because a massage therapist works in a physical therapy clinic or with a chiropractor that they make more money, when in reality they usually make the same or worse as someone working in a rented space. Many of them are still working off of a commision, or are getting paid a very low salary in those offices. You also never know what they are responsible for paying for themselves in terms of licensing fees, insurance, massage equipment, oils, laundry, etc. If you are unsure, I feel that is fine to just ask.
Also consider the fact that masssage therapists can not work more than 20 (MAYBE 25) hours a week because the job is physically exhausting. And that is assuming they have a full schedulle, all the time, which is not usually the case.
I work in a physical therapy clinic, make a commison (so i am self employeed and must pay 20% of my earnings in quarterly taxes), and have to supply my own materials. I dont “expect” my clients to tip me, but the majority of them do, ranging from $0-$40 dollars per hour.
I love my job so the money isnt what is important to me, but i DO think that if you feel your session was good/beneficial, that you should tip.
