Any experience with getting reimbursed with FSA funds for massage or bedding products?
I’m looking for answers from those who successfully used their flexible spending account to get reimbursed (with the own tax-free money) for massage therapy or neck pillows. I’ve been having a stiff neck every morning and want to ask my Dr for a referral. I know that my insurance won’t pay for massage, but maybe FSA will? I also need a better pillow, but haven’t been able to find one that works well (need to go to a specialized place to get a good one, I guess).
I work for a TPA (Third-Party Administrator) and am well-versed in FSA rules and regulations.
You can use your FSA funds for Massage Therapy under certain conditions: It must be prescribed by a physician for the treatment of a specific illness, injury, trauma, or condition.
It cannot be prescribed “for your well-being,” but must be prescribed for treating a specific disease or condition. If it meets that requirement, our company allows it.
You should be aware that the final authority on your reimbursement is your employer’s Summary Plan Description document, which can legally be more restrictive than the IRS regulations, but in most cases, they match up perfectly.
