Can someone have surgery for soft tissue damage?
About 2 years ago, I was flipped out of a hammock and i hit the top of my foot on a concrete corner. It swelled up and turned all kinds of colors. (yes I am not scared of hammocks) About a year ago, I went to physical therapy because my foot would start hurting during fall and winter. (the cold weather makes it hurt extremely bad.) My parents told me I had to quit sports all together.
Right now, I just took 2 ibuprofen and wrapped my foot up. My dad has trouble with his shoulders and he had surgery, so I was wondering if I could have surgery on my foot.
It would depend on the type of injury that you sustained. You can definitely have soft tissues repaired via surgery. Your dad’s shoulder problem was likely a rotator cuff tear, which is a tear of the muscles around the joint. Surgery can sew those muscles back together so that they can support the joint properly.
Surgery of this type is aimed at fixing something that is wrong (and is fixable). Torn muscles, torn ligaments, disrupted cartilage… All of these joint problems can be fixed (or at least improved) with surgery in many cases. By getting rid of loose hunks of tissue, sewing structures back together, or making new structures to replaced damaged ones, the joint is able to function better and there is less pain.
In your case, it would depend on what damage was done, and how it could be fixed. If x-rays, CT scans, MRIs, or other diagnostic tests have come back normal, then the doctors wouldn’t have anything to go in and fix. If it is something like chronic muscle spasms or trauma-induced osteoarthritis, there really isn’t much that can be done surgically. If arthritis has progressed far enough that there are large outgrowths of bone causing pain, those could be removed, but most of the time arthritis is just something you have to live with. If, however, you tore ligaments, those could possibly be repaired with surgery (depends on the ligaments torn and the amount of damage).
Because it’s been 2 years since the injury (and one year since you last saw the doctor?) then you might want to get another evaluation. You’ll want to see an orthopedic doctor, preferably one who specializes in feet. They will be able to determine if you could benefit from surgery, or if there are other treatments that could alleviate your pain. Definitely ask your parents for a second opinion before you drop out of sports (but be prepared to listen to the doctor if he tells you that you have to modify your physical activity, like switching to something with less impact).
