What are some good things to use with a group of people with sensory problems?
I am working with a low ability group who have one or several sensory problems, i.e they are blind or deaf or both. I am trying to find different things to try with them that they may enjoy or that may stimulate the the senses they do have. So far I have used, moon sand, foot baths, massage items, but i’m trying to think of more things like strange sounds or odd things to taste or touch?
Home made dough with food flavourings added (such as vanilla/banana/strawberry/peppermint etc) give off lovely aromas and are not harmful if ingested. Having a batch of dough with things like sultanas rolled into it gives it a more interesting texture. Both dry and cooked pasta are interesting to handle, and you can make a gelatinous liquid with cornflour and water set out in a tray which does strange things when you draw your finger through it. Cause and effect objects (press a disc to make it vibrate or make a sound/ spiky magnetic massage balls rolling around inside a large tin or upturned tambourine) are also good. Foil blankets, often used for camping, are great too.
