Duration of Tinnitus Following a Perforated Ear Drum?
I perforated my ear drum a month ago with a Q-Tip. After three weeks I finally was able to see an ENT who said my eardrum was healed but that I had an outer ear infection. He cleaned my ear and proscribed antibiotics, however, this led to a fungal infection. I saw another ENT who cleaned my ear again and put some anti-fungal gel on it. Throughout this ordeal I have had a ringing in my ear, but now that the pain is gone the ringing has become very noticeable and distracting. The skin around my ear still needs to heal, and I still cannot hear as well out of my left (perforated) ear as I can out of my right. I get to see the ENT again in a few days. I am hoping that the ringing will dissipate as the ear drum and skin around my ear continue to heal. What have been other people’s experiences with tinnitus or ear ringing following an eardrum perforation? How long did it take for the ringing to stop? Did it stop?
I had a perforated ear drum due to strep ear. I had to take antibiotics. I had noticeable hearing loss for about a year, with intermittent tinnitus for about that long. Certain tones or sounds would trigger it.
Tinnitus usually lasts only so long as the structures of the ear are damaged. However, I have read of cases where it went on for years. Ask your ENT for a prognosis, and an explanation of why you still have it.
