Physical Therapy Documentation

Physical Therapy Documentation
Is physical therapy deductible?

I am receiving a course of physical therapy from a licensed physical therapist to help with my balance problems, to avoid fall and fractures related to my osteoporosis. I am self-referred. Are my payments deductible as medical expense on my federal income taxes? Would they be if I were referred by a physician? And if so, where can I find documentation for such deductions. Thanks.

Physical therapy prescribed by a physician or other medical professional such as a physician’s assistant or nurse practitioner is deductible if it’s intended to cure or treat a disease, illness or defect. Self-referrals leave you in a gray area. You really don’t want an IRS revenue agent making the call as to medical necessity, so get a referral from your primary care provider.
