Any info is fine. I’m about to declare my major and was wondering how difficult it would be to become a Physical Therapist. 10 points to the answer with the most info!
Entrance into a PT program is typically highly competitive. Seats are generally limited and while minimum GPAs are typically 3.0, usually those who are admitted have at least a 3.5.
The way most PT programs are run are that you apply once you’ve neared completion of a bachelor’s degree in a field of your choice but have also meet the required courses for the PT graduate program. This may vary from school to school but typically requires a year each of college level general chem, bio and physics. Anatomy and physiology, statistics, calc and/or trig are also required. Intro to psych, abnormal psych and lifespan psych are also typical requirements.
Most schools also require to take the GRE and recommend a score above 1000. Observation hours and letters of recommendations from a PT clinic are also typical requirements.
Once admitted into the graduate phase of PT school, it is typically another 2.5-3 years, bringing the total education to about 7 years.
There are also what are called direct admit or guaranteed admit programs. These are programs that will guarantee you a spot upon entering the school as a freshman. You just have to maintain your GPA throughout your undergraduate years. You would not have to reapply as a grad student. Its a good way to guarantee you will get in, and it’s often an accelerated program (taking 6 years), but it’s usually reserved for very expensive private schools.
