Instead of $200 light therapy box 1m away, why cant I just shine one LED in my eye from 1cm away?
I want to make or buy a light box, for seasonal affective disorder symptoms, which requires the light to enter your eye and does not require it to contact your skin. Since the amount of light, lux, depends on area, why isn’t it possible to just shine a much smaller / cheaper light in your eye than putting a $200 light box far away?? There must be some reason, otherwise no-one would pay $200. It is baffling me. Help.

People pay $200 for something because they BELIEVE it will help them. End of story.
As to the physics part of your question, you are correct – to get the same amount of lux, you can use a smaller light closer to the subject.
