Is it possibe to apply psychology to every day social interactions?
Does anyone know if there is a basic ‘handbook’ or some such which explains how you can use psychology or behavioural analysis and apply it to every day and real life situations (i.e. non therapy based)? Also, does this fall under the remittance of social psychology? Since I don’t know anything about psychology I don’t even know if it would cover something like this.
I want to get a basic grounding in some kind of behavioural analysis, e.g. why people do/say things they do/do not, partly to see if it can help with the analysis of my own ethnographic data (based on observations of every day interactions of a certain group).
Any suggestions/references most welcome.
Yes, the application to human interaction is indeed a proper part of psychology (I am reading for my Master’s at an international uni at moment). As far as practical applications, a Canadian by name of Irving Goffman did quite a few books in the last century.
Let’s see. Carl Rogers, an American, from the USA also had quite a bit to say, as did Albert Bandura.
The central theme is role perceptions, and how one thinks he or she is expected to perform, combined with various pressures, and things learned from early years in family, school, etc.
There are other areas, such as social exchange (costs versus benefits), and if there is a presence of psychological disturbance or diagnosable conditions.
I hope this helps. If you Google Carl Rogers, Bandura, Social exchange, and various other theorists and resources, you can find a good many resources for free. Also as previously mentioned, attachment theory also helps explain. There are oodles of theories awaiting, and pieces of a good many apply. Thus, you can work to use these parts and come up with your own theory of how the interactions work.
