Is it normal to have excessive swelling after arthroscopic knee surgery?
I had arthroscopic knee surgery last Thursday (10/4), and they did a lateral release. It’s now Sunday (10/14). My knee is still extremely swollen, despite the fact that I’ve used a Bregg ice machine correctly, as I was told it would help with the swelling. I’m a college student and haven’t been able to return to school yet. I visited my orthopaedic surgeon a few days after the surgery and he acted like this is normal, but everyone else who has had this type of surgery done seems to bounce back in a few days. It’s been 10 days, and I’m still mostly on crutches, and it seems excessive. I’ve been to physical therapy and I’m doing all my exercises, but I’m concerned – my knee is still so swollen that it won’t fit comfortably in my jeans, and my quad muscle is very, very weak. Is there anything else I can do to speed up this process? Is there a possibility something else might be wrong?
I’m also still really sore and in pain..
I had arthroscopic surgery on 8/31 and have not fully recovered. I was on crutches for almost four weeks and have been going to physical therapy twice a week. The therapy seems to help, however, I’m unable to walk or stand for prolonged periods and I don’t have a normal gait. This is frustrating since I’ve heard that most people resume their normal activities within about six weeks. I told my therapist about my concerns and he says that I shouldn’t worry about it. He believes that I’m progressing. My knee is more flexible and I can pedal comfortably on the stationary bicycle. He says that each person’s recovery varies. I know that this is a frustrating experience. Initially, I had a great deal of swelling on my knee. The opposite knee was also beginning to feel some discomfort. This was due to it compensating for the weakness in the other knee. I rested my knee as much as possible by keeping it elevated and applied ice as needed. I also was prescribed anti-inflammotory medication, which I took as needed. You may also be trying to push your healing process too fast. Don’t aggravate it! It will eventually feel better. Although, it is a slow road to recovery. I’m finally able to walk short distances. I anticipate several more weeks before I can resume my previous activities. Good Luck and I wish you a healthy recovery.
