A mass, m1 = 6.00 kg, resting on a frictionless horizontal table is connected to a cable that passes over a pulley and then is fastened to a hanging mass, m2 = 10.0 kg, as in Figure P4.30. Find the acceleration of each mass and the tension in the cable.

Since the hanging mass is greater than the mass resting on the frictionless horizontal table, we will note that the direction of the motion of the system will be downward.
Your working equations (using Newton’s 2nd Law) are:
Equation 1: T1 = 6a
Equation 2 : 10(g) – T2 = 10a
where
a = acceleration of the system
T1 = tension on the string connected to the 6-kg mass
g = acceleration due to gravity = 9.8 m/sec^2 (constant)
T2 = tension in the string connected to the 10-kg mass
NOTE
T1 = T2 (since the horizontal table is frictionless then it will be assumed, as well, that the pulley is mass-less and frictionless)
This being established, Equation 2 becomes
10g – 6a = 10a
Combining terms,
16a = 10g
Solving for “a”,
a = 10(9.8)/16 = 6.125 m/sec^s
Tension in the cable = T1 = T2 = 6(6.125) = 36.75 N
