Physics tuning fork question?
An unknown tuning fork is struck with a 480 Hz tuning fork and 28 beats were counted in 4 seconds. When a little piece of plasticine is put on the known tuning fork, 20 beats were counted in 2 seconds. What is the frequency of the unknown tuning fork?
Please give me a hand and an explanation, im having some real trouble with this
For the first part, the beat frequency is 28 beats / 4 s = 7 Hz
That’s the difference in frequency between the two tuning forks. But there are two possibilities, the unknown tuning fork frequency (f) could be either 7 Hz higher in frequency than 480, or 7 Hz lower.
So f is either 487 Hz or 473 Hz, but we don’t know which yet.
The plasticine load will reduce the frequency of the known tuning fork slightly. If the frequency of the unknown fork is 473 Hz, that means that the difference in frequency between the two forks will now be smaller, so the beat frequency will be lower. Is that what is observed?
Well, the new beat frequency is 20 beats / 2 s = 10 Hz, so “no” is the answer. The beat frequency has actually gone up. That must mean that f is higher than 480 Hz
So f = 487 Hz
