I need help doing dextrose solution calculations?!?
Calculate the amount of dextrose in 1,000 mL 10 % DW (Dextrose Water). Recall that percent means grams of drug per 100 mL of fluid.
Determine the amount of dextrose in 500 mL 5 % DNS (Dextrose / Normal Saline). Recall that percent means grams of drug per 100 mL of fluid.
ALSO
Synthroid is ordered 175 mcg po every morning for an 8 year old weighing 29.5 kg. The pediatric drug handbook states, “for a child 6 -12 years old: po dose 4-5 mcg/kg/day.”
Is the ordered dose safe?
So a 10% DW solution means that there is 10 grams of dextrose in each 100 mls of solution. So if you have 1000 mls of solution, you will have 100 grams of dextrose total.
A 5% solution of DW means that you have 5 grams of dextrose in each 100 mls of solution. So if you have 500 mls of solution, you will have 25 grams of dextrose total.
29.5 kg * 4-5 mcg/kg/day = 118 mcg – 147.5 mcg, so a dose of 175 mcg is too high for a child that weight 29.5 kg (it would come to almost 6 mcg per kg)
