Why are most americans scared of Chiropractic care?
Isn’t chiropractic a non-evasive approach to health care?
There are two concerns that are brought up by novices of chiropractic care. First people are afraid of chiropractic care because of the stereotype of “popping” the back. In practice, there are many ways to correct spinal misalignments. There are tables that have sections that gently drop allowing the vertebral segment to realign. There are also instruments that deliver a quick, light force that will also make a spinal correction. There is no scientific literature stating that manual chiropractic techniques that cause the popping sound or cavitation cause any harm.
Second of all, patients are concerned that adjusting the spine results in too much spinal motion or hypermobility. During the examination of a patient, one of many variables we look for is fixation or “stuck” vertebrae. When a vertebrae misaligns it often becomes stuck out of place causing abnormal movement affecting the function of the nervous system. The intent of the chiropractic adjustment is to introduce normal movement to the vertebrae normalizing function of the nervous system. Safety in any health profession typically reflects in malpractice premiums. Most chiropractic malpractice premiums are around $1,000 per year. Compare that with any MD’s premium.
